 Hublot announces partnership with Manchester United; launches Red Devil Bang

At a recent press conference and in the presence of international media (including MPParabia) at the legendary Old Trafford, Hublot’s CEO, Jean-Claude Biver has announced the top Swiss watch brand’s new partnership with Manchester United, also known as the Red Devils, the number one football club in the world. This indeed constituted a red-letter day for Hublot as it reinforced its presence in the world of international football.

To commemorate this landmark event, Hublot has heralded a new Big Bang—the Red Devil Big Bang, a 44.5 mm black ceramic chronograph displaying a 45-minutes counter—the duration of a half football match, especially developed by Hublot for football and Manchester United, the club which has seen the likes of such remarkable celebrity players as Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona and more recently David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. Sporting on the dial of the numbered, limited-edition watch, resistant to 100 metres & with a power reserve of 42 hours, is the celebrated Red Devil logo that honours the colours of the club, whose history is punctuated with victories and memorable dramas.

 Middle East—China jewellery trade to receive a boost

The Middle East is looking to consolidating its ties with China to sustain its diamond and jewellery trade and consolidate its role as the gateway to other key emerging markets worldwide, officials say. The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has recently announced at a specially convened press conference that over 600 global diamond traders and retailers will converge on Dubai from 8 to 9 November 2008 for the inaugural Middle East –China Diamond & Jewellery Summit at the newly-opened Atlantis Hotel on Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah island.

According to Peter Meeus, DMCC Executive Director for diamonds said that private consumption of diamond and jewellery in the Middle East, which accounts for 18 to 20 % of the USD $ 50.0 billion world market, is still very strong and is set to grow by 7.0 % in the next few years. The diamond trade in the UAE enjoyed a record growth in 2007, crossing USD $ 10.0 billion. Likewise, the jewellery industry in China has achieved record sales last year, reaching over USD $ 26.0 billion, an 11.0 % increase over the preceding years.

 GCC’s private wealth reserves over USD $ 1.5 trillion

It was revealed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at the recently concluded Middle East Money Summit held in the UAE that the GCC is one of the world’s most reliable and secure investment platforms and one of the world’s biggest markets with an estimated USD $ 1.5 trillion in private wealth.

 Chopard generates sales 10.5 % growth in Italy during Q1-Q3 2008

Sales of Swiss luxury watch & jewellery manufacturer Chopard in Italy during the period January—September 2008 climbed 10.5 % relative to the same period in 2007, reports Rappaport News. The company’s sales in Italy in Q3-2008 alone increased 16.4 % over the corresponding period in 2007.

 Gold trade in Dubai for period January—September 2008 touches USD $ 21.0 billion

The value of the gold trade through Dubai reached USD $ 21.0 billion during the first nine months of 2008, despite the global financial crisis, according to the latest statistics released by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).

Total imports reached 469.0 tonnes while exports of bullion from Dubai were 275.0 tonnes. Dubai’s gold imports were up 44.0 % while exports were up 51.0 % during the first nine months of 2008, compared to the same period in 2007. The value of the gold trade during Q3-2008 itself reached USD $ 8.0 billion. Compared to the last year’s third quarter, gold imports grew 18.0 % while exports 42.0 %.

DMCC has recently moved to its new headquarters, the 63-storeyed Almas Tower, where a number of Dubai’s bullion traders are located. India remains Dubai’s top gold export destination with 124.0 tonnes, followed by Switzerland importing 67.0 tonnes from Dubai.

 WFDB President expresses solidarity with India’s GJEPC

Avi Paz, President of the Antwerp, Belgium-based World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), has lent support to a statement issued by India’s Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), regarding the need to reduce the supply of roughs to the market during the coming few weeks.

Earlier, Vasant Mehta, the newly elected GJEPC Chairman and also Vice President of the International Diamond manufacturer’s association (IDMA) had in a recent statement called for maintaining equilibrium between demand and supply and keeping global stock and debt manageable during current challenging times. In expressing his endorsement to the statement, Paz stipulated that all players in the world market ought to observe caution to ensure that the industry remains healthy.

 Dubai’s polished diamond trade reaches USD $ 5.29 billion in H1-2008

Dubai’s total trade of polished diamonds reached USD $ 5.29 billion in H1-2008, according to Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE). Polished diamond imports to the Emirate grew by 99.0 % during H1-2008 to reach USD $ 2.94 billion from USD $ 1.48 billion during the same period in 2007. Exports rose by 153.0 % to reach USD $ 2.35 billion from USD 929.0 million during the same period in 2007.

India, Belgium and Hong Kong were the top polished diamond trade partners for Dubai and jointly accounted for USD $ 4.62 billion in total trade volumes.

 De Beers production falls 4.0 % in Q3-2008

De Beers’ production fell 4.3 % to 13.1 million carats in Q3-2008, according to a recent report in Rappaport News. For the first nine months of the year, De Beers’s production fell 4.1 % to 37.3 million carats. The drop in production came as a result of lower recoveries at De Beers’ flagship mines in Botswana and South Africa. The company said that its medium and long-term growth would depend on market conditions and demand generated by China, India and other developing countries.

 Another Damas store looted in Northern UAE

Jewellery worth USD $ 274,000 was stolen from another Damas jewellery shop in Al Lolo Centre in the Al Nakheel district of Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost Emirate of the UAE. The thief managed to break the locks of the jewellery shop with a sharp object, stole all the gold items and jewellery in the store and escape without being detected.

The theft occurred in the early hours of the morning of Tuesday, 28 October 2008 and was reported to the Emirate’s Police authorities, who have set up a team of investigators to apprehend the culprit, still at large, at the earliest.

 Diamond smuggling bid foiled in the UAE

Dubai Customs has foiled an attempt by an unidentified African woman to smuggle rough diamonds weighing 53.5 carats into the country worth approximately USD $ 1.2 million. The woman’s attempt to illegally bring these diamonds was intercepted by Customs inspectors at Terminal I of Dubai Airport.

Using the intestines detector machine, officials discovered that two clothing bags were wrapped around the suspect body as well as two sealed bags of rough diamonds in an effort to bypass the authorities. “We detained the woman and seized the contraband,” said an official. The woman will be referred to the relevant security agencies for further legal action.

 Newmont Mining Corporation Q3-2008 profits falls

Denver, Colorado-based Newmont Mining Corporation has recently revealed that its 2008 third-quarter profits fell just over 50.0 %, hurt by a decline in gold volumes and lower production costs. Net income dropped to USD $ 196.0 million from USD $ 397.0 million for the same period in 2007. Gold-mining companies have felt the effects of the recent financial market turmoil and fears of a global recession. Lower gold prices in conjunction with higher raw material and energy costs, have raised the cost of production, squeezing profit margins.

 Bvlgari to support ‘Rewrite the Future’ campaign of Save the Children charity

As part of the initiatives scheduled for 2009 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its foundation, Bulgari has chosen to support the ‘Rewrite the Future’ campaign of Save the Children (STC), the largest independent international organization for the defence and championing of children’s rights, present in over 100 countries.

Bulgari has decided to make its own contribution to STC with the objective to raising Euro 10.0 million by the end of 2009, of which Euro 1.0 million will be donated by the company to the charity in advance. About 20.0 % from the sales proceeds of a specially created Bulgari ring for the campaign, will be donated to the charity, according to Francesco Trapani, CEO, Bulgari.

Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer has become a member of the exclusive Swiss Watchmaking Club, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH), which counts brands such as Cartier, Jaeger LeCoultre & Audemars Piguet among its other partner members. For TAG Heuer, the membership became official on 1 October 2008, capping off a 150-year history dedicated to haute horlogerie watchmaking.

Grant Macdonald has marked its Middle East launch over a high-profile dinner at the One & Only One Royal Mirage. More than 100 VIP clients, members of the press and celebrities attended the event at the Arabian Court of the hotel.

 F. P. Journe not to hold its salon in 2009

Geneva based Swiss watchmaker Francois-Paul Journe (F. P. Journe) will not hold its salon in its manufacture in Geneva in 2009 as the brand has decided not to launch any watch creation, the company said in a recent press release.

According to the statement, two important timekeepers in the Souveraine collection have been introduced lately, the Centigraphe in 2007 and the Repetition Minute Souveraine in 2008, the latter not being delivered yet. F. P. Journe wishes to concentrate his forces on manufacturing these two models with their exceptionally complex movements and give them time to breathe a little, the statement continued.

 Van Cleef & Arpels unveils iconic watch collection in the Middle East

Swiss haute horlogerie manufacturer Girard-Perregaux has presented its newest collection in the Middle East through its UAE partners Damas. The new collections include the Vintage 1945 Jackpot Tourbillon, ww.tc for men and women and the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Full Calendar.

Now for the first time, a watch combines a tourbillon and a slot machine equipped with a striking mechanism in perfect proportion with the Vintage 1945 case. A window at the 12.00 o’clock position on the dial reveals a row of three symbols while a cut-out at the 6.00 o’clock position lets one admire the gold bridge and the tourbillon cage.  New Bentley GMT by Breitling launched in the Middle East

Breitling has launched the Bentley GMT, a COSC-certified chronometer that brings the world to the wrist, thanks to an ingenious multiple time zone display system. The watch is equipped with an additional independent hour hand, distinguished by its red colour and its hollowed triangular tip, which performs one full turn of the dial in 24 hours.

The 49 mm model is powered by a self-winding Breitling Calibre 47B with a calendar and 24-hour 2nd time zone. The case is made of steel and 18-carat red gold and is water-resistant to 100 metres.

Swiss watch manufacturer has created the ‘lunar’ ‘Magistralis’ watch, the world’s first and only brand to create a watch featuring an authentic piece of the moon.  Tibaldi introduces limited edition pen in the Middle East

Premium Italian pen manufacturer Tibaldi has introduced the precious limited-edition writing instrument—the Tibaldi Draco Et Phoenix pen. The Dragon fountain pen is fashioned from black resin while the Phoenix roller ball is made of ivory resin.

A diamond patterned finish is found on the pen’s trimmings in sterling silver with rose gold plating. The ratio of the divine proportion applies to the height and width of every Clou de Paris engraving found on the pen’s trim and barrel. Tibaldi pens are marketed across the Middle East by UAE-headquartered Nobel House Trading LLC.

 Countdown begins for Jewellery Arabia 2008

The glamour and glitter of Jewellery Arabia returns to the vastly expanded Bahrain International Exhibition Centre on Tuesday 25 November 2008, when the leading, established and exclusive brands of haute jewellery and high-end premium watches congregate for the region’s largest, long running, best-attended and most prestigious watch & jewellery exhibition.

The new 64,500 sq. m. air is gearing up to welcome the international watch & jewellery industry at the 36th Inhorgenta Europe to be held from 20 to 23 February 2009. To date, close to 1,200 exhibitors from 47 countries have confirmed their participation. The organizers expect approximately 30,000 industry visitors and will feature new collections and brands of watches, jewellery, gemstones, pearls and technology.

 28th Istanbul Jewellery Show-I to take place in March 2009

The Istanbul Jewellery Show-I, the 28th Edition of the International Jewellery, Silver Watch & Equipment Fair will take place in this historic Turkish city from 18—22 March 2009. The 2008 Edition of the show featured 1167 exhibitors from 30 countries; 33,811 trade visitors including 9,416 international visitors from 86 nations.
