| GCC H1-2008 advertising expenditure up 23.6 % over H1-2007 |

GCC advertising expenditure in H1-2008 increased by 23.6 % to reach USD $ 3.77 billion compared to USD $ 3.05 billion for the corresponding period of 2007. Khamis Al Muqla, Chairman, Gulf Marcom Group based in the Kingdom of Bahrain & Board Member of the International Advertising Association (IAA) Worldwide stated that according to the Pan Arab Research Centre (PARC) the Pan Arab media share reached USD $ 1.57 billion, (representing 41.64 % of the total advertising expenditure in the GCC), an increase of 24.0 % as compared to the same period of 2007.
The UAE with an advertising budget of USD $ 929.0 million registered the biggest increase of 42.0 %. Figures for the other GCC states are as follows: Saudi Arabia (USD $ 550.0 million; 11.0 % increase); Kuwait (USD $ 337.0 million; 11.0 % increase); Qatar (USD $ 157.0 million; 1.0 % increase); Oman (USD $ 120.0 million; 69.0 % increase) and Bahrain (USD $ 50.0 million; 2.0 % increase). In the remainder of the Arab world, Egypt at USD $ 514.0 million demonstrated an increase of 37.0 % and Lebanon at USD $ 150.0 million, an increase of 20.0 %. |

The French Jewellery House of Boucheron continued its 150th anniversary celebrations in New York and London. | Rolex Awards for Enterprise & HCT announce Rolex Middle East Forum |

HE Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan, UAE Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and Rebecca Irvin, Director of the Rolex Awards for Enterprise signed a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) covering a series of activities between the two organizations.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Tayyeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor, HCT, this agreement is ‘another example of working with all divisions of the community to achieve the Government’s goals of providing quality culture and environment for the students in the 16 campuses across the country and the public at large’.
The Rolex Middle East Forum will be the culmination of a series of events being planned around the official 2008 Rolex Awards for Enterprise ceremony that will take place in Dubai on 18 November 2008. |

| UAE buyers of fashion / luxury products are brand conscious |
According to the recently released Neilsen Global Luxury Brands Survey, one in every three UAE residents is a ‘shopaholic’ for luxury fashion with Calvin Klein, Christian Dior and Gucci at the top of the list. The findings were presented at the two-day ‘Leaders of Luxury Summit’ recently held in Dubai by Piyush Mathur, Regional Managing Director, for the UAE, North Africa and Pakistan.
“Unlike most countries where people chose two or three luxury brands as their clear favourites, UAE consumers stood out for their purchasing habits of several high-end fashion brands,” noted Mathur. According to the report, UAE consumers are brand conscious and the country has also topped global rankings in believing that designer brands are of significantly higher quality than standard products (43.0 %). Three in five (59.0 %) of UAE customers said they wore designer brands to project social status. |

| Dip in gold prices causes run on gold & jewellery retail stores in UAE |

The UAE witnessed phenomenal sales of gold and jewellery during the fourth week of October as eager shoppers, spurred by the significant drop (almost 20.0 %) in gold prices (USD $ 22.6 per gram for 22 carat gold; USD $ 24.0 per gram for 24 carat on Thursday, 23 October 2008), made a beeline to retail outlets across the UAE to snap up whatever was available ahead of the Deepavali (Festival of Lights) celebrations across the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East.
Sales increased dramatically and sales in Abu Dhabi alone increased 400.0 % on one day, Thursday 23 October 2008, according to Tushar Patni, Chairman of the Gold & Jewellery Group in the Emirate. According to Patni the sale amounts to between 30 to 50 kilograms of gold per shift. |

| Christie’s to hold Fifth Jewels & Watches sale in UAE this month-end |
It will be a busy auction day on Wednesday, 29 October 2008 at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel as prized pearls, gleaming diamonds and some of the most desirable timepieces will go under the gavel as Christie’s holds its Fifth Jewels & Watches Sale. The auction is expected to net up to USD $ 25.0 million in sales. The highlight of the sale will see 12 lots of fine diamond jewellery on offer from a private European collector with a combined worth of USD $ 6-8 million.
Also on offer will be a mix of rare vintage Cartier, antique Indian jewels and items from the world’s leading contemporary designers. Meanwhile, a platinum Revolution 2 Tourbillon watch by Franck Muller will cost bidders upwards of USD $ 200,000. |

| Two gang members involved in Dubai heist arrested in Europe |

According to local media reports, two suspected members of the criminal ring involved in the sensational Wafi Mall jewellery heist in Dubai last year (2007) have been arrested in Europe, following an Interpol alert. The Dubai Police have received all documents relating to one of the alleged gang members who was arrested in France.
The Police are now also seeking details of the arrest of the second suspect in Italy, and will then proceed with the extradition formalities in both cases. It may be recalled that two other suspects had already been arrested in Dubai earlier and the stolen goods recovered. According to senior Dubai Police Officer, one of the two arrested suspects, a 27-year old Serb was apprehended following a car accident, while the other is a 30-year old Bosnian who was arrested at a hospital. The suspects are alleged to have carried fake passports and have committed over 200 crimes during the past nine years. |

| Damas store burgled in Northern UAE |
A Damas outlet in the Northernmost Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, 125 km north of Dubai, was burgled and jewellery worth USD $ 355,000 has gone missing, according to local newspaper reports. According to a police source, the thief managed to enter the Damas store after drilling a hole through the roof. The thief broke all closed circuit cameras in the shop after committing the theft.
Police investigation reveled that only one person wearing a mask committed the crime. The police have refused to divulge further details about their findings. |

Bulgari recently opened its new two-storey Paris flagship store on Avenue George V, its fourth in the French capital and at 1,500 sq. m., its largest in Europe. Luxury watchmaker Wyler Geneve, the official timekeeper for the 2009 Dakar (which commences in Buenos Aires on 3 January 2009) has recently unveiled the official watch of the rally—a limited-edition chronograph made of rare metal tantalum. The production of this watch is restricted to 182 pieces, which was the number of competitors in the first-ever Dakar rally 30 years ago.

Luxury Italian jeweller Damiani has set ambitious targets for its Pan Middle East expansion plans. Swiss watch brand Bell & Ross established in 1992 has introduced the endurance BR02 Instrument Chronograph new model in the Middle East. The model was first previewed at Baselworld 2008. The professional diving instrument, water-resistant to 500 metres (or 1000 m) is designed for professionals who require tools fro optimum reliability—water resistance, readability and functionality. The model is fitted with photo-luminescent large hands and indices to make it easier to read in the deepest and darkest depths. | AHCI independent watchmakers to join TWF |
Independent watchmakers of the illustrious Academie Horlogere des Createurs Independants (AHCI) or the Horology Academy of Independent Watchmakers, have announced their decision to participate in Japan’s first and only watch trade show, the First Tokyo International Watch Fair to be held at the Tokyo Big Sight from 21 to 24 January 2009. 32 watch makers including Vianney Halter and Thomas Prescher (both from Switzerland) and Aniceto Pita (Spain) and Aaaron Becsei (Hungary) are expected to attend.
TWF will be held concurrently alongside International Jewellery Tokyo (IJT), the largest jewellery show in Japan. The show, organized by Reed Exhibitions, will welcome 1,720 exhibitors from 35 countries around the world. |

Seddiqi & Sons, leading retailers of premium Swiss watches and fine jewellery brands in the UAE has announced the appointment of Christophe Nicaise as its CEO. “we believe Christophe Nicaise has the right balance of industry know-how, entrepreneurial spirit, management experience and understanding of the region to drive forward the ambitious plans that we have set for Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons Holding,” said Abdul Hamied Seddiqi, Vice Chairman of the company.
Earlier, Christophe Nicaise was Managing Director for Harry Winston ME, Levant & India based in Dubai, UAE. Previously he worked as Middle East & India Brand Manager for Swiss watch maker Baume & Mercier, part of the Richemont Group. |

| Olivier Muller, Founder & CEO, to depart from Villemont |
| Olivier Muller, Founder & CEO of the luxury Swiss brand Villemont, will leave his company at the end of October 2008, the firm said in a Press Release. Muller founded Villemont in 2004 and within a short span of time catapulted the brand into the frontlines of the premium Swiss watch industry. At Baselworld 2008, Villemont unveiled its first house-designed movement, a universal hour watch with unique watches. “I have had a fulfilling and satisfying tenure at Villemont and I leave at a time when the brand image in the global marketplace is strong,” said Muller in parting statement. No successor has been announced yet. |
