| Swiss watchmaker Hublot acquired by LVMH |

LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s leading luxury Group, has just announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire the Hublot Group, a high-end range watchmaker riding the crest of very strong growth.
LVMH will acquire Hublot from Carlo Crocco, Founder-Chairman who established the premium brand in 1980 and a company partly controlled by the veteran Jean-Claude Biver, CEO, who has managed Hublot since 2004.
Key officials from both Hublot and LVMH unanimously welcomed the merger. In separate statements released, Founder-Chairman Carlo Crocco, CEO Jean-Claude Biver and Philippe Pascal, CEO, LVMH’s Watches & Jewellery Business Group expressed their appreciation of the deal and expressed their eagerness to work closely with each other to ensure mutual growth and further advancement of the watch brand and the holding company.
Hublot, renowned for its iconic Big Bang collection, offers a range of exceptional watches made from ingeniously fused materials. Recently, Hublot launched a new Big Bang collection for women at Baselworld 2008.
Hublot’s growing footprint spans worldwide and the company has registered strong growth in the Middle East, the Far East, North America and key European markets. |

| Richemont beats forecast for sales |
Richemont, the Swiss luxury goods group of which Cartier and Piaget among other top brands are part of, beat expectations for full-year sales (April 2007—March 2008) as demand for luxury goods withstood a general slowdown in consumer spending. The company reported jewellery store sales grew 16.0 % to USD $ 4.0 billion for the year ending 31 March 2008.
Overall sales also rose 16.0 % to USD $ 8.40 billion helped by jewellery, top-end watches & Montblanc pens which resulted in its share increment by 3.0 %. “The strong growth in sales of luxury products seen during the first nine months continued into the first quarter of the financial year,” said a Press statement issued by Richemont.
The luxury goods sector has been propelled in recent years by red-hot demand from fast-growing economies in the Middle East and Asia, where their brand names are very popular. |

| Harry Winston in bid to support independent watchmakers |

Harry Winston & the Time Aeon Foundation, a non-profit organization, have recently announced an international competition that will support novice independent watchmakers and help make their creative ideas a timepiece reality. In line with this objective, Harry Winston & Time Aeon Foundation will identify promising, independent watchmakers and provide him / her with the necessary resources—training, financing & tools, to develop, produce and small series of Harry Winston watches.
The joint announcement was made jointly by Thomas O’Neill, CEO, Harry Winston and Martial Fragniere, President of the Time Aeon Foundation, which was set up this year for supporting, promoting and safeguarding the art and craft of fine watch making. |

| Osvaldo Patrizzi sets up new Auction House specializing in horology |
The internationally acclaimed horological expert, Osvaldo Patrizzi, who established Antiquorum, the pioneering auctioneering firm in 1974, has now founded Patrizzi & Co. Auctioneers, a new auction house based in Geneva and specializing in horology.
“Patrizzi & Co. is the result of several decades of experience in antique and collector’s timepieces. It reflects my insights into current market needs and collector’s expectations,” said Mr. Patrizzi, President & CEO, in announcing the formation of his company, on the sidelines of SIHH 2008. Mark Schumacher, an industry professional with wide-ranging experience has been appointed COO.
The company projects its first year turnover to be CHF (Swiss Francs) 50.0 million and expects its first auction to take place in Geneva in the Fall of 2008. |

| TGJTA plans to enhance business relations with Namibia |

A high-power delegation from the Thai Gems & Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA), organizers of the bi-annual Bangkok Gems & Jewellery Fair (BGJF), is expected to visit Namibia, the mineral & gemstone rich country in South-West Africa in June 2008 to reach an agreement and long-term partnership for raw material imports and investment in diamond, jewellery cutting and minerals.
The Namibian Ambassador to Thailand HE Neville M. Gertze recently met with HE Mingkwan Sangsuwan, Deputy Thai Prime Minister & Commerce Minister and Khun Rachane Potjanasuntorn, Director General Department of Export Promotion. |

| Five more mega malls to be constructed in Dubai within the next five years; GCC retail space fastest growing in the world |
Nakheel Retail, a division of Dubai World’s property developer arm Nakheel, will spend at least USD $ 3.0 billion to build five more innovative, world-class shopping malls in Dubai within five years. This number is expected to reach 100 malls in the next 20 years. Gross Leasable Area (GLA) in Dubai is set to treble to 4.25 million sq. m. by the end of 2010 from 1.37 million sq. m. in 2006.
The retail real estate market in the GCC is the fastest growing in the world and about 16.35 million sq. m. of GLA will be completed in the region by 2010. The increase represents a 565 % growth in the available GLA in the region since 2000, up from 2.46 million sq. m. at the start of the millennium. The region’s highest retail space increases will be in the UAE and Saudi Arabia at 44.0 % and 30.0 % respectively, according to property consultant Colliers International. |

The retail sector is worth approximately USD $ 100.0 billion to the economies of the six Gulf Co-Operation Council (GCC), making it the second largest non-oil industry in the region, according to British retail research company, Retail International. |

| Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa has recently announced in Cairo that the First Arab Consumer & Brand Protection will be held in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea Port city of Jeddah from 19 to 21 October 2008 under the patronage of Prince Khalid Al Faisal, the Governor of the Makkah region. The forum is being organized by the Arab League and the Islamic Chamber of Commerce & Industry in association with Hemaya Universal, a private sector organization which leads brand protection and anti-counterfeiting operations in the Arab world. |

| Christie’s to hold ‘The Dubai Sale’ on 29 April 2008 |

‘The Dubai Sale’, the most significant offering of natural pearls to appear on the market for decades highlights Christie’s third sale of jewels and watches at 6.30 PM on 29 April 2008. The sale features a selection of 178 rare and important gemstones, jewellery and watches as well as examples of contemporary design and is expected to realize in excess of USD $ 20.0 million.
Among the precious items on offer is an antique nine-row pearl necklace with multi-coloured enamel and white stoned details created in 1880 and consisting of 1,888 pearls and expected to sell for as much as USD $ 120,000. The necklace was a gift to legendary Arab singer Umm Kulthum by HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahayan, the late President of the UAE. |

| DMCC in deal to promote jewellery trade in China |

Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the People’s Government of Panyu District, China, for co-operation towards the promotion of jewellery trade between the two countries, with a special focus on diamonds & coloured stones. Panyu, a district of Guangzhou situated in the Guangdong province accounts foe more than a fifth of China’s export of gold & jewellery.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC and Tan Ying-Hua Party Secretary of the Panyu People’s Government. |
