| GJEPC initiates steps to consolidate India’s diamond industry |
 |
In a bold move intended to protect the interests of the Indian diamond industry, the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India has asked its members to temporarily halt the imports of rough diamonds for a month beginning 25 November 2008. The Council is of the opinion that the provisional stoppage of such imports will help the industry face the challenge that has emerged as an outcome of the recession facing global financial markets. Many diamond traders in the Middle East get their diamond polishing work done in India.
Mr. Vasant Mehta, the recently elected Chairman, GJEPC, observed that Council members had adequate rough diamonds in stock to minimize the impact on the labour force. “Our move will basically cause fewer roughs to enter the diamond pipeline and the producing companies will thus indirectly share in the burden of financing operations and therefore contribute to a faster restoration of normalcy in an otherwise healthy business,” he noted.
The international economic meltdown has caused immense strain on the players at all levels throughout the diamond value chain. In a recent press statement, the Council affirmed that this radical move will also send a signal to the banking system that the diamond industry will not increase its indebtedness in a credit-squeeze environment. |

| Waskoll Jewellers |
French company Waskoll Jewellers will be presenting their collections for the first time at Jewellery Arabia. Founded a century ago, and working until 1995 as a supplier for the ‘grandes maisons’ of the Place Vendôme in Paris, this still family-owned company launched its own first collection of pieces in multicoloured sapphires in 1995. Joyful and feminine, this marriage of different hues has become one of Waskoll’s characteristics.
Inheritors of a long tradition of savoir-faire, third generation brothers Cyril and Kirk have breathed new creativity into Waskoll, placing them securely on the road to success. “We have the skills, why not develop them in our own name?’’ Cyril Waskoll thought at the time. “Jewelry is a profession of traditions, where each family has its assets and its secrets. We decided to play ours up through our jewelry,’’ he explains.
Waskoll’s creations display a very recognizable, sensual and appealing style, with the mixing of big gems and smaller sparkling stones.
Bursts of colour, sparkling diamond flames, or arabesques that put their seal in precious stones upon the meeting of East and West: It is an identity unique among all others, which seduces the assured tastes of its clients, chic trailblazers. “Our clientele,’’ Cyril explains, “is made up of the ten percent of women who set fashionable trend in society, whether it be in a small town or a world capital.’’
The House relies upon a widespread retail network rather than standalone boutiques, in order to distribute the over 700 pieces available in a price range from €5,000 to €50,000. Waskoll enjoys high visibility in the windows and corners of over 400 stores in France and abroad (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Belgium, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, the Caribbean…). Experiencing double-digit annual growth, the House plans to expand its presence in the United States, but also to establish itself in Russia, China and the Middle East. |
