 Notorious Pink Panther gang prime suspects in Cartier s Cannes store heist

Armed thieves dressed in Hawaiian shirts recently stole jewellery worth up to USD $ 21.55 million from the Cartier boutique in Cannes in the French Riviera in broad daylight. Londons The Daily Telegraph is reporting that a man with a deep suntan and wearing a flowery shirt walked into the store in Cannes and threatened the staff with a gun. Two accomplices wearing crash helmets then entered the store and took jewellery from glass display cases before taking off on scooters and fleeing along Cannes famous Croisette promenade. The theft was over in two minutes, according to store employees.

 Gold jewellery tops Dubai non oil exports in Q1 2009, Dubai gold sales fall 30 percent in June

Gold jewellery topped non oil exports from Dubai in the first quarter of 2009, the Emirates Export Development Corporation said. Saeed Al Awadi, CEO, Dubai Export Development Corporation (DEDC) said the list was unchanged from last year, thereby showing that the impact of the global economic downturn has a minimal impact on exports. Non oil exports rose 58 percent from USD $ 7.4 billion in 2007 to USD $ 11.68 billion in 2008, according to Dubai World Statistics Department. Meanwhile, gold jewellery sales in Dubai were around 30 percent in June 2009, compared to a year ago, as high prices of the metal and the economic downturn deterred tourists from visiting the Emirate, five local jewellery retailers told Reuters.

 Jewellery advertising spend up in H1 2009 in the UAE

Overall advertising spend in the UAE fell 26 percent in the first half of 2009 compared to the same period in 2008, according to statistics published by the Pan Arab Research Centre (PARC). The biggest reductions were in the property and financial sectors, which fell 75 percent and 43 percent respectively during the January—June 2009 period. Interestingly, advertising spend rose in the jewellery sector for this period as also for the clothing and household segments. Cartier, Rolex, Chopard, Chanel Patek Philippe, Piaget and Audemars Piguet were among the top advertisers in the premium watches & jewellery sectors in the region.

 FHH & FHS launch new media campaign to highlight the menace of counterfeits

The Geneva based Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) & the Bienne based Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FHS) have joined forces to launch an international anti counterfeiting campaign entitled Fake watches are for fake people. Their objective is to inform the public on the damage caused by this global scourge. According to calculations based on customs seizures, counterfeits and piracy worldwide amounted to USD $ 200 billion to USD $ 360 billion or roughly 5percent to 7percent of international trade. FHS estimates that over 40 million fake Swiss watches annually compared with exports of almost 26 million authentic Swiss watches in 2007.

 India’s doubling of gold import tax will encourage smuggling, WGC

India’s plan to double import duty on gold may lead to smuggling of bullion into the worlds biggest consumer, undermining efforts by the Government to raise funds, reports Bloomberg. According to Dharmesh Sodah, Director at the Mumbai based India offices of the World Gold Council, the tax, coupled with high domestic prices and global recession will hamper jewellery demand. In its recently announced budget for the current fiscal year, the Government of India doubled the duty on gold and silver imports for the first time since 2004.

 Christie’s to hold Jewels and Watches auction in UAE in October 2009

Christie’s will hold its 6th series of Jewels & Watches auction in the Middle East on 28 October at the Jumeirah Towers Hotel in Dubai, UAE. The selection will comprise rare coloured gemstones, exquisite natural crafted into jewels, pearls and spectacular diamonds by brands such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bvlgari and Harry Winston. Christie’s will also offer a selection of some of the worlds leading watch brands including Patek Philippe, A. Lange & Sohne & Rolex.

 DDE sets up new diamond boiling facility

The Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) has recently announced the setting up of a specialized plant for removing dirt and trace materials from rough and polished diamonds at the Dubai Multi Commodities Centres (DMCC) Almas Tower. According to DMCC Executive Chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem, the state of the art diamond boiling facility will be used to ensure that diamonds reach their highest potential value. Boiling companies have existed to assist the rough diamond trade since the stones started to be mined on a large scale.

 First WFDB Interbourse Pavilion to be launched at Iberjoya show in September

The World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) will inaugurate the first ever Interbourse Pavilion at the Iberjoya trade show in the Spanish capital Madrid in September 2009. The 83 sq. m. pavilion will function as a diamond trading floor upon which members of the WFDB bourses can exhibit.

The Swatch Group, the worlds biggest watchmaker is expecting sales to improve in H2 2009 after a difficult start to this year, the Groups CEO Nick Hayek Jr. said in a recent interview with a Swiss business newspaper. After a difficult start this year, we are now experiencing a substantial month to month improvement, Hayek told the business publication and adding, We will see a real stimulus in the second half of the year.

Jaquet Droz will participate in the Only Watch 09 auction event in Monaco from 23 to 26 September 2009, along with 34 other high watchmaking brands. All the proceeds from this landmark auction will go to support research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a childhood illness. According to Manuel Emch, President, Jaquet Droz, the brand will auction an exclusive timepiece, a unique Grande Seconde combining the Grand Feu enameled dial, technique of the 18th century and a case made of high tech ceramic, technique of the 21st century.

 Omega installs new time keeping mechanisms in Dubai landmark

For over four decades, the centrally located Clocktower in Dubai has been one of the citys top landmarks. It was built in 1964 and apart from structural renovations in 1972, remained largely unchanged. The clock was changed and replaced in November 2008 by Omega, which also saw the refitting of new time keeping mechanisms and new faces with Roman numerals. Now however, the faces have been replaced with Arabic numerals and Omega has updated the time keeping capabilities and enhanced its reliability based on satellite technology.

 Hermes opens second boutique in Dubai

The 170 year old Parisian House of Hermes has opened its second 375 sq. m. store at the Dubai Mall. The boutique was opened in partnership with Al Mana Retail LLC. Inside the store, one walks past two characteristic Hermes ex libris designs set into mosaic on the ground on to a central passageway lined on both sides by white stucco cubes placed at irregular intervals. The cubes house the various departments including jewellery and other luxury lifestyle products.

Montblanc has announced the opening of its new boutique within the iconic French Department Chain Store, Galeries Lafayette, in the Dubai Mall.
