 Sharjah Police implements 8 year old decency law forbidding men from wearing jewellery

Police in Sharjah, the third biggest Emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have begun enforcing a September 2001 decree prohibiting men from wearing jewellery or accessories. According to local reports, several men were recently apprehended by the Police in public areas including malls and their bracelets / chains / earrings confiscated. They were warned to discontinue wearing them. Only watches and rings were permissible. A senior Sharjah Police official told an English language daily that under Islamic law, men were not allowed to wear jewellery and fashion accessories.

 GCC customers unperturbed by ongoing recession, new study reveals

Despite the recession hitting the region, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) residents have maintained their pre recession spending levels, a recent survey of consumers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE by Booz & Company has revealed. According to the report, just 28 percent of consumers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia have reduced spending levels in the past six months and 26 percent have increased spending. According to Gabriel Chahine, Partner, Booz & Company, reductions in spending are still not widespread and are concentrated within a relatively small proportion of the population reflecting consumer confidence.

 PPR still manages to post H1 2009 profits beating forecast

French luxury & retail group Pinault Printemps Redoute (PPR) has revealed it was hit by a slump in spending on luxury goods in Japan and the USA but has still managed to post first half profits that beat forecasts. PPR made an operating profit of 707 million Euros for the period January to June 2009, down from 743 million Euros for the same period in 2008, according to Chairman & CEO, Francois-Henri Pinault. PPR is the retailer behind Gucci and owner of fashion brands Yves Saint Laurent, Boucheron, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Hermes among others.

 Saudi Arabian gold jewellery sales down 30 percent in H1 2009

The volume of gold jewellery sales in Saudi Arabia has fallen by as much as 30 percent in the first six months of 2009, as the economic crisis and high gold prices deter buyers, according to gold retailers in the Kingdom. Gold prices are just too high presently and people cannot afford these rates, according to Salam Omar Bin Salman, Deputy Manager, Bin Salman Gold Jewellery, a medium sized gold retailer in the Kingdom.

 Some Indian diamond units in UAE to resume production

Several major Indian diamond traders in the UAE are hopeful that the market for diamond jewellery will revive after September 2009, based on which partially closed jewellery manufacturing units will resume production in early 2010. According to sources, less than 20 percent of Indian owned diamond workshops in the UAE are working to full capacity. Many units had to send back employees to India in the face of falling sales and demand. Now though, some outlets are planning to recall some of the employees sent on long leave.

 Mass exodus at top brass of Romain Jerome

The owners of RJ Watches SA and its watch brand Romain Jerome have decided to part with the CEO, the Head of Administration, the Sales director and two other staff members, according to a recent press release issued by the company. The company rushed to assure that the change of management in no way jeopardizes the ongoing success of the company, which continues to enjoy excellent sales.

 China, DMCC to boost gold trade opportunities

Following the participation of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) at the recently held (2 & 3 July, 2009) Asia Gold Focus 2009 Conference in Guangzhou, China, where investment strategies for the Dubai gold market was highlighted, it was observed that Chinese gold and jewellery manufacturers are increasingly eager to work closely with UAE based companies. In 2008, China was the world’s largest gold producer, second largest consumer and fifth largest holder of gold reserves. According to Harendra Kailath, Director Gold, DMCC, several Chinese gold refineries have expressed interest in applying for the Dubai Good Delivery standards.

 IDMA applauds the establishment of the International Diamond Board

The Antwerp, Belgium based International Diamond Manufacturer’s Association (IDMA) has welcomed the establishment of the International Diamond Bourse (IDB), which is to become the first industry wide supported organization to create and sustain strong consumer demand for diamonds worldwide through effective category marketing. According to Ronnie Vander Linden, IDMA Secretary General, the creation of the Board bodes well for the entire global industry including all major diamond miners as well as leading diamond manufacturers and jewellers.

 Pakistan is world’s 10th largest gem market

The global demand of gold is more than 2,500 tonnes and Pakistan’s consumption is more than 100 tonnes, which reportedly makes Pakistan the world’s 10th largest market in the gem sector. According to Shafi Chowksi, a former coordinator on the gem and jewellery development sector Strategy Working Group (SWOG), the country can achieve USD $ 1.5 billion gems and jewellery export target by 2016.

Cartier International Polo recently celebrated its 25th anniversary at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor, UK. The event, a major highlight in the British social season attracted over 30,000 attendees.  Hublot makes forays in China with the second edition of the Red Devil Bang; opens new boutique

Swiss fine watchmaker Hublot has continued its booming activity in the burgeoning Chinese market by recently inviting several of the best Red Devils players from Manchester United to take up the challenge to test even veteran footballers. According to Jean Claude Biver, CEO, Hublot, the event took place in the Chinese city of Hang Zhou on the same day the watchmaking brand opened their first boutique in the city. For each goal scored, Hublot promised to donate the sum of USD $ 250,000 to the HOPE Foundation to raise funds for impoverished children in China and Hong Kong. The 44.5 mm case, 100 metre water resistant, limited edition (to only 500 units) Red Devil Bang Chronograph was launched by Hublot in the second half of 2008 to commemorate their official partnership with Manchester United Football Club.

 Blancpain President wins top honours in Super Trofeo car racing championships

 De Beers reports drop in sales in H1 2009

Sales of rough diamonds at De Beers plummeted 57 percent in the first half of 2009 as sightholders procured less, according to financial results released by the company. Sales of rough diamonds by De Beers Diamond Trading Company (DTC) fell from USD $ 3.74 billion in H1 2008 to USD $ 1.71 billion in H1 2009. However, despite the drop, De Beers noted marked improvement in the market as the year progressed, with sales climbing from USD $ 400 million in Q1 2009 to USD $ 1.311 billion in Q2 2009.

 Damas posts USD $ 59 million net profit over 15 month period

Damas International posted a net profit of USD $ 59 million for the 15 month period ending 31 March 2009. Damas recorded a revenue of USD $ 1.65 billion for the period, the company said in a statement posted on the NASDAQ Dubai website. Damas, a leading Middle East retailer for watches & jewellery, has 514 stores worldwide.

 R.A. Gem Centre expands despite the economic downturn

Hong Kong based R.A. Gem Centre Ltd., a division of S. Vinodkumar Diamonds Pvt. Ltd., is poised for strong take off in the second half of 2009, the company has stated in a press release. To accommodate this projected growth, the Hong Kong Office has expanded massively from the current 6,000 sq. ft. to 14,000 sq. ft., according to Ketan Shah, Director of the company. Young but coveted Swiss watch brand Hautlence has launched its Quantieme collection in the Middle East, representing the brand’s first foray into circular watch designs with the introduction of a 44 mm wide case watch with a black opaline dial, intermediate dial with laser cutting minute figures and a smart sewn alligator strap. The watch has a 40 hour power reserve and is water resistant to 3 ATM.

 High fashion watches emerge from renowned Italian designer

Jet set Italian designer Alessandro Baldieri, who has designed the homes of Hollywood stars Lionel Ritchie and Nicolas Cage, designed his first watch collection in 2006 after 20 years in the designing business. Alessandro is the only Italian fashion designer who makes fashion watches. He personally designs his lines and follows up the production process paying careful attention to every detail and component from the watchcase to the strap.

 Industry heavyweights to participate in IIJS 2009, IDCS to make its debut

The upcoming 26th Edition of 46,000 sq. m. India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) 2009 will be held from 6 to 10 August 2009 at the NSE Grounds in the Western suburb of the country’s commercial metropolis Mumbai. Conceived and organized by the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) of India, IIJS 2009 is the nation’s and indeed Asia’s biggest jewellery exhibition. According to Mr. Vasant Mehta, Chairman, GJEPC, the Exhibition, which will host over 1550 individual booths and expected to attract over 30,000 official visitors will also feature country pavilions from UAE, Turkey, Thailand, Belgium and Italy among others. Leading industry bodies such as the World Gold Council, the Platinum Guild International and diamond giants Rio Tinto and Diamond Trading Company, a division of the De Beers Group will be participating. Debuting at IIJS 2009 will be the Indian Diamond & Colourstone Show (IDCS), organized to highlight the advantages of sourcing loose gemstones from India, a leading source. It will be held on 4 and 5 August 2009, in the run up to IIJS 2009.

 Time ticking for the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair 2009

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organized Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair will be held from 2 to 6 September 2009. The third largest watch & clock trade fair in the world, a fixture for the past 27 years, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 2008 edition of the exhibition attracted 760 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions and over 17,000 visitors representing 99 countries and regions.

 Abu Dhabi International Jewellery & Watch Show to be held in October 2009

The annual Abu Dhabi International Jewellery & Watch Show will be held at the newly constructed, ultra modern Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in the UAE capital from 14 to 18 October 2009. The exhibition is supported by the World Gold Council and the International Gemmological Institute (IGI). Over 8,000 visitors attended the 2008 Show that saw the participation of 101 exhibitors from 15 countries.

 Vincent Perriard appointed CEO TechnoMarine

Vincent Perriard, who has currently served out his three year tenure as President of Biel Switzerland headquartered Concord Watch Company, part of the Paramus New Jersey based Movado Group Inc. (MGI), will shortly join Geneva based TechnoMarine Group as its CEO. The appointment will be effective 17 August 2009.

 Alex Grinberg to head Concord Worldwide

MGI Luxury Group SA has announced the appointment of Alex Grinberg to the position of Worldwide President of concord with immediate effect. In a welcome statement, Movado Group Chairman, President & CEO Efraim Grinberg praised Alex Grinberg’s 15 years experience with the company and his professional abilities. The Movado Group designs, manufacturers and distributes Movado, Ebel, Concord, Coach, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Juicy Couture watches.
