 Qatar Holding Buys London Luxury Department Store, Harrods

Earlier rumors published by the AWJ webletter on the Qatar-Harrods buyout have been confirmed. The investment arm of Qatar sovereign wealth fund has bought London luxury department store Harrods from Egyptian business tycoon Mohammed Al Fayed. The deal is estimated to be worth around USD 2.3 billion. Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani stated on this occasion, Qatar Holding will do their best to upgrade this monument, to make it even greater and better for tourism and also for the British people.

 Montblanc expands retail operations in UAE in anticipation of a market rebound

In anticipation of the much awaited market rebound, luxury goods manufacturer Montblanc, has implemented a planned expansion of retail operations in the country with the opening of boutiques in high end malls in the UAE to showcase their latest products. Montblanc 2010 retail expansion in the UAE has begun with a boutique in Abu Dhabi, followed by a boutique in Mirdiff City Centre and a boutique in Ibn Batuta Mall. The current Montblanc expansion demonstrates the luxury giant ongoing commitment to the regional expansion of its business.

 Dubai gold exports rise 9 percent with an import of 576 tons in 2009

Dubai gold industry was worth $29 billion last year. Approximately 25 tons of gold is present at any given time in Dubai gold and jewellery retail outlets, the 7th Dubai City of Gold Conference organized by the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG), was told. Compared with the previous year, Dubai gold exports rose by nine percent in 2009. Statistics from the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority (DMCCA) show that the emirate imported 576 tons of the precious metal in 2009, significantly higher that the average annual figure of 498 tons.

 Suspected Pink Panther member arrested in France

A suspected member of the Pink Panthers, Bojan Vuckovic a 24 year old Serbian was arrested by Montenegro police. Pink Panthers is a notorious gang accused of robbing jewels worth hundreds of millions of euros in heists worldwide, Interpol said. Vuckovic was arrested during a check by Montenegro police at the Montenegrin-Serbian border, after they identified him on the basis of nominal information supplied by Austrian authorities. Interpol added that it will seek to draw on the latest elements following the arrest of Vuckovic to pool and review investigative information to help identify further members, accomplices and other crimes linked to the gang.

In one scene, Richard Gere character, Eddie, is presented with a specially designed, engraved Piaget Polo yellow gold watch from his special friend, Chantel, played by actress Shannon Kane.  Longines and CNN International partnership

Swiss watchmaker Longines and CNN International have signed an exclusive advertising partnership on 24 March 2010 on CNN new tennis programme, Open Court. Hosted by the former Australian champion Pat Cash, the show is broadcast in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Pacific Asia and Latin America. The firm from Saint-Imier thus draws slightly closer the ties that have bound it for many years to this sport, particularly through its ambassadors Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf.

 Damas case is under DIFC court jurisdiction, the court ruled

The court ruled that the DIFC Court has jurisdiction over the 22 million (Dh80.74m) breach of contract case filed against Damas by Amwal Al Khaleej. Amwal is asking the court for Damas to send back the 22 million shares it sold to Damas or for the Abdullah brothers to pay the full sum of $22,042,696 plus interest rates at the rate of 12 per cent plus damages. The ruling, made by Justice Tan Sri Sn, is based on Article 5(A) (1) (b) of the Judicial Authority Law, which says the DIFC Court of First Instance shall have the exclusive jurisdiction over civil or commercial cases and disputes arising or related to a contract that has been executed or a transaction that has been concluded.

During the 9th Luxury and Creation Conference held in Paris on 15 March 2010, Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot received the remarkable Special Jury Prize. The Jury Special Prize was awarded to Jean-Claude Biver in recognition for his exceptional career and bold approach, and also for his sense of management and innovation. Other watchmakers in the spotlight were enamel worker Dominique Baron and engraver Olivier Vaucher, who won the Talent for Elegance award for their contribution to Van Cleef & Arpels collections. Among the nominees the following names standout: Maximilian Busser (Talent for Boldness), Richard Mille (Talent for Originality and Talent d or) and founder of the French watch manufacture BRM Bernard Richards (Talent for Innovation).

 OMEGA to serve as Official Timekeeper for IAAF Diamond League

OMEGA, widely known for its role as Official Timekeeper at the Olympic Games, has signed an agreement with the Diamond League AG confirming that it will provide the same services to the new IAAF Diamond League circuit in its 2010 inaugural season. The 14 meetings planned for 2010 replace the Golden League, whose six meetings were contested exclusively in Europe. The IAAF Diamond League will still include the most prestigious events on the European athletics calendar but will also feature meetings in China and the United States and will kick off its ambitious schedule in Doha, Qatar on the 14th of May. OMEGA has served as Official Timekeeper at 24 Olympic Games since 1932 and recently extended its agreement with the International Olympic Committee through 2020.

 Officine Panerai and Ferrari end partnership

After five year licensing contract, Officine Panerai and Ferrari has announced that the production and distribution of fine watches under the brand name Ferrari Engineered by Officine Panerai will be ended as of 1 April 2010 and will not be renewed. Officine Panerai and Ferrari wish to express their mutual satisfaction with and gratitude for a collaboration which has enabled them to create a successful partnership between two Italian brands of excellence, internationally renowned as symbols of Made in Italy in their respective fields.

 Jaeger-LeCoultre joins Global Champions Tour for the coming three years

The Global Champions Tour (GCT), the most prestigious championship in show jumping today, is proud to announce that Jaeger-LeCoultre will be their official partner and time keeper for the next three seasons.  Swatch China partner expects fastest growth in three years

Hengdeli Holdings, the retail partner of Swatch Group AG in China, said 2010 sales growth may be the fastest in three years as it expands market share and Chinese consumers splash out on luxury watches and jewellery. The watch retailer said it was accelerating store openings to tap surging demand for timepieces in China, where a quarter of all internet searches for Swatch Groups Omega, research firm IC-Agency said. Exports of timepieces from the European nation to China in March increased 90 percent to 77.9 million Swiss francs (Dh265 million). Sales to Hong Kong, where many retailers said most of their sales were to mainland Chinese, jumped 68 percent to 235.5 million Swiss francs.

The Dubai Pearl Exchange (DPE), a subsidiary of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) in conjunction with the Dubai City of Gold Gala has hosted the Pearl Essence Award Ceremony on 2 May 2010. The eleven students were felicitated during the ceremony held at Level 2, the Almas Tower, home to the Dubai Pearl Exchange. Pearl Essence was conceived by the DPE as an International Pearl Jewellery Design program specifically focused on pearl-based jewellery designs, influenced by the rich pearling heritage of Arabia and represented in a modern and contemporary fashion.

 Christie Dubai Auction of Jewels and Watches realizes $8.6 million / AED 31.5 million

Christie, the worlds leading art business announces a further successful auction result of $8,589,250 / AED31,539,726, surpassing its pre-sale estimate. The top lot was a 17.71 carat, D colour, VVS2 clarity rectangular diamond ring, by J.Roca, which sold for $1,345,500 / AED4,938,840 / or $75,974 per carat. The selection of watches, featuring 43 lots, sold for a total of $1,030,550 / AED3,784,418. The top price was for an exceptional Patek Philippe, ref.5971P achieving $278,500 / AED1,022,652. With 23 new auction records, this sale season underlines the confidence in the art market and the growing commitment from Middle Eastern and international clients to participate in Christie Dubai sales.

Christie at its eight auction of International Modern and Contemporary Art, estimated at $4.8 million, realized $15,122,125 / AED55,528,443, selling 96 percent by value and 86 percent by lot. This is an extraordinary result which reflects the quality of the sale and the passion of the collectors that Christie has helped to bring to this fascinating market during the past 3 years. It is extremely rare for a sale in any market to triple its pre-sale estimate. The top price of the sale was paid for Mahmoud Said (Egyptian 1897-1964) Les Chadoufs, of 1934, setting a record for any modern painting by any Middle Eastern artist, selling for an extraordinary $2,434,500 / AED8,939,484.

 Renovated OMEGA Museum in Biel reopened to public

Renovated Omega Museum in Biel has reopened its doors to the public on 3 May 2010 after several months of extensive renovations. The Museum, which opened in January of 1984, is the oldest museum dedicated to a single watch brand. Located just opposite OMEGA headquarters in Biel, it features items representing the brands entire history, including the watchmakers bench used by Louis Brandt when he began to make watches more than 160 years ago. One of the new sections of the Museum is dedicated to prototypes – watches which were developed by OMEGA but, for various reasons, never introduced into commercial production.
