| This current edition of the Weekly AWJ B2N Newsletter Broadcast |
 |
Dear Reader,
This current edition of the Weekly AWJ B2N Newsletter Broadcast (Number 116) is the last in the present H1-2008 series before we break for the customary summer furlough. It is a momentary pause, a respite from the rough and tumble of daily business in the Middle East when the summer heat is at its peak.
We hibernate temporarily, only to emerge revived, refreshed and recharged in mid-August 2008 when we promise to bring you more sparkling news from the electric, dynamic, exciting, vibrant, colourful world of the premium watch and high-end jewellery in the Middle East.
Our offices in the UAE will continue to function as normal and we welcome and look forward to receiving your comments, suggestions, viewpoints and any input you may have on the first and only Newsletter of its kind in the region. Post your observations on info@mpp-me.com. We love to hear from you.
Meanwhile, you too enjoy your well-deserved vacation. If you do not have one, well you probably will have one soon. Whenever your sabbatical, we will still be working to bring you the latest developments from the industry in this region.
Au revoir and see you soon!

| Jewellery, Gems & Watches in first place on ‘investment of passion’ by Middle East HNWIs in 2007; GCC tops world wealth growth |
In 2007, High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs worth over USD $ 1.0 million) and Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (Ultra-HNWIs) spent considerable amounts of their wealth on ‘investments of passion’ despite rising costs and financial markets turmoil. HNWIs bought tangible luxury items such as fine art, luxury automobiles, private yachts, jewellery and intangible ‘passion investments’ such as ‘live the dream experiential vacations’, according to the 12th Annual World wealth Report by New York-headquartered Investment banker Merrill Lynch and US Consulting firm Capgemini.
According to Amir Sadr, Head of the Middle East Wealth Management Business at Merrill Lynch, Jewellery, Gems & Watches held third place at 13.8 % of expenditure after private jets / luxury yachts / automobiles and fine art. Luxury travel was listed at number four. Together, these four categories, accounted for more than half of all luxury item expenditure among HNWIs. Interestingly, although ranked third globally among HNWIs in 2007, HNWIs and Ultra-HNWIs in the Middle East favoured this category as their number one investment of passion segment.
As a region, the Middle East represented the fastest growing base worldwide of wealthy people. Combined assets for HNWIs were expected to grow from USD $ 1.7 trillion (2007) to USD $ 3.4 trillion in 2012, an annual average growth rate of 17.5 %, compared to only 10.8 % for Latin America, the next competitive region. |

| GCC surplus to trigger 20 % rise in SWFs |
 |
The GCC’s current account balance, poised to hit USD $ 350.0 billion in 2008, is expected to spur a 20.0 % surge in Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs). Current account surpluses of the region, driven by record oil revenues, have seen a steady rise from less than USD $ 30.0 billion in 2002, according to a recent report by Chatham House, home to the UK’s Royal Institute of International Affairs.
Over the past 6 years, the GCC’s GDP has more than tripled from around USD $ 330—340 billion in 2002 to an estimated USD $ 1.1 to 1.2 trillion for 2008. Total export revenues have soared from USD $ 180.0 billion in 2002 to an expected USD $ 850.0 to 900.0 billion for 2008, of which USD $ 600-650 billion likely from oil exports alone. |

| Flourishing family-run pearl farms on China’s East coast replaced by companies |
For decades, the limpid waters of Zhuji (250 km south if Shanghai) have fed China’s rise to the world’s top producer of freshwater pearls and now they are helping to turn this Eastern Chinese city into a global hub for the lustrous gem. The rivers and pond of Zhuji are protected from the farm and factory wastes that foul much of China’s prosperous east coast and this helped in the proliferation of family-run pearl farms. Now however, these farms are being steadily replaced by companies that cultivate and distribute their produce worldwide. Zhuji is now home to more than 3,000 pearl cultivation companies producing up to 30 million pieces of pearl jewellery each year. |
