| Dubai’s gold trade touches USD $ 7.0 billion in Q1-2008 |
| Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has announced that gold trade through Dubai during Q1-2008 reached USD $ 7.0 billion, registering a percentage growth rate of 74 % from USD $ 4.08 billion during the same period in 2007. Furthermore, gold exports from Dubai in Q1-2008 was 115.0 tonnes, an increase of 74 % from the corresponding period in 2007 at 66.0 tonnes. A total of 122.0 tonnes of gold was imported into Dubai during Q1-2008 (up 14 % from the 107.0 tonnes in Q4-2007) with imports mostly comprising scrap jewellery. |

| Movado Group net profits nosedive 52 % in Q1-2008 |
 |
The net income of the Paramus, New Jersey, USA-based Movado Group, designers, manufacturers and distributors of such individual brands as Movado, Ebel, Concord, Hugo Boss, Lacoste (& 4 others), plummeted 52.0 % to USD $ 1.249 million for the period Q1-2008 ending 30 April 2008. The corresponding net income for that period in 2007 was USD $ 2.4 million.
Sales were virtually unchanged at USD $ 101.353 million in Q1-2008 as against USD $ 101.363 million in Q1-2007. Gross profit was USD $ 65.020 million in Q1-2008 as against USD $ 61.652 million in Q1-2007. 2009 sales projection is estimated at between USD $ 555.0 and USD $ 565.0 million. |

Mumbai-based Indian Institute of Jewellery (IIJ) held ‘Parinam’ (Result in Hindi, India’s lingua franca), IIJ Students 4th Convocation and Jobs Exhibition at the Institute’s Seminar Hall on Thursday, 29 May 2008. The accompanying three-day Jobs Exhibition (30 May to 1 June, 2008) provided job opportunities for graduating students as the gathering will attract professionals from the jewellery industry. | Asia’s biggest colourless diamond auctioned for USD $ 6.2 million |

A 101.27 carat diamond, internally flawless but rated VVS1(very very slightly imperfect 1st degree) for clarity and about the size of a squash ball, has fetched USD $ 6.2 million at a recent Christie’s auction in Hong Kong. The ‘shield-shape’ stone was cut from a 460-carat hunk of rough crystal and mounted on a tiara, rather than a necklace or pendant given its extraordinary thickness. Naming rights for the gem will be granted to the new owner, whom Christie’s would only reveal as a private buyer. |

| Salam Stores plans major expansion across the Middle East |
Salam Stores of Qatar, which owns retail outlets in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Qatar and Oman with a cumulative retail space of 40,000 sq. m., plans to invest USD $ 300.0 million over the next five years to open branches in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt and Iraq. The expansion plans were revealed by Issa Abdul Salam Abu Issa, Chairman & CEO, Salam International Investments Ltd., which owns and runs 25 companies in a range of sectors.
Recently, the company invested USD $ 30.0 million in its new 11,000 sq. m. new store at the Wafi City Mall. Salam’s store in Qatar’s ‘The Gate’ commercial complex will be expanded to occupy 15,000 sq. m. and the company hopers to open three new stores in Saudi Arabia in the next five years. |
